The short version
- MakesPerfect is operated by PJ Doland, a person rather than a company.
- It costs nothing, because there is no billing system in it.
- You are responsible for your account and for everything uploaded through it.
- Upload only music you have the right to upload. A public-domain composition does not make a modern engraving of it free.
- Uploaded files are stored at public URLs. Treat every upload as shareable by anyone holding the link.
- The service is provided as it is, with no warranty and no uptime guarantee. Keep your own copy of anything you would hate to lose.
- Either side can end it: you can stop using the site, and an account being used abusively can be closed.

Who you are agreeing with
These terms are between you and PJ Doland, who builds and operates MakesPerfect. There is no company entity behind the name; the operator is a person. Creating an account or using the site means you accept what is on this page.
Your account
Give an email address that reaches you, since you have to verify it before you can sign in and it is how a password reset gets back to you. Passwords must be at least eight characters. Keep your credentials to yourself: an account belongs to one person, and anything done through yours is treated as done by you. If you think someone else has got into it, change the password and mail support@makesperfect.org.
The role you pick at signup, student or teacher, decides which parts of the interface you see. It is self-declared and grants no authority over anybody else. Access to another person's data only ever comes from a relationship that person accepted.
What it costs
Nothing. There is no billing system in the application, no paid tier, and no trial that ends. If charging ever becomes necessary you will be told before it applies to you, and you will not be billed for anything you did not agree to.
Acceptable use
Do not use MakesPerfect to:
- upload or share material you have no right to distribute
- send invitations to people who have not asked to hear from you; the invite flows exist to connect a studio, not to deliver bulk mail
- harass, threaten or impersonate anyone
- reach data belonging to other people, or probe around the authorization checks and rate limits that stop you from doing so
- attack or overload the service, scrape it wholesale, or upload anything built to run harmfully on someone else's machine
- resell access to it
What you upload
You keep whatever rights you already hold in the material you upload. Uploading it grants the operator permission to store it and serve it back to you and to the people you shared it with, which is the whole of what makes the product work. Nothing more is claimed, and your files are not used for any other purpose.
Copyright is your responsibility, and sheet music is a minefield worth naming: a composition can be centuries out of copyright while a modern engraving of it is not. Scanning a copyrighted edition is still infringement even though the notes are old. Upload works in the public domain, editions you hold a license for, or music you wrote or engraved yourself. The demo library that ships with the site is public-domain engraving from the Mutopia Project and is already free to copy.
Remember that uploaded files are stored at public URLs, as the privacy policy sets out. The in-app sharing levels govern who can find a piece through MakesPerfect; they do not stop somebody who already holds the storage link. Upload with that in mind.
If you believe something on the site infringes your copyright, mail support@makesperfect.org with enough detail to identify the file, and it will be taken down while the claim is sorted out.
Content that gets removed
Material that is clearly infringing, illegal, or used to harass someone can be removed, and the account that posted it closed. That is a last resort rather than a moderation policy: this is a small site, and almost everything is settled by an email.
No warranty, and what that means here
MakesPerfect is provided as it is and as it happens to be available, with no warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. There is no uptime commitment. There is no backup guarantee you should rely on. There is no promise that a feature will exist tomorrow in the shape it has today.
Keep your own copy of anything you would be upset to lose, especially the music files you uploaded. To the fullest extent the law allows, the operator is not liable for lost data, lost practice records, or any indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of the service. Where a jurisdiction does not permit that exclusion, it applies as far as it legally can and no further.
Ending it
You can stop using MakesPerfect whenever you like. To have the account and its records deleted, mail support@makesperfect.org from the address on the account; the privacy policy describes exactly what that removes.
From the other direction, an account that breaks these terms, attacks the service, or is used to harass someone may be deactivated or deleted. A deactivated account loses access within minutes, because sessions are re-checked against the database rather than trusted until they expire.
Ending a teaching relationship is a separate and much smaller thing, and either side can do it at any time without involving the operator at all.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and any dispute belongs to the state or federal courts located in Virginia.
Changes to these terms
Revised terms are published on this page with a new date at the top. Continuing to use the site after that means you accept them. Nothing published later changes the terms that applied to something you already did.
